RosalindTest é uma avaliação feita em sangue periférico que se baseia na quantificação de moléculas de RNA mensageiro (ou transcritos) do gene regulador do metabolismo energetico, quantificação essa que representa a sua atividade. Esse gene é mais ativo nas mulheres com câncer de mama quando comparadas com mulheres sem a doença. Essa maior atividade do gene é uma resposta à condição de hipóxia (queda de oxigênio na célula) que é auto-infligida pela célula quando essa se torna maligna.

A quantificação de moléculas é feita por meio de amplificação gênica através PCR digital em duplex, composto por um gene endógeno (controle) e o gene-alvo.

Num estudo clínico de RosalindTest testou-se mais de 190 mulheres com e sem câncer de mama, demonstrando uma acurácia de 97% para detecção do câncer de mama.

O marcador é específico para câncer de mama, ou seja, a sua presença não tende a indicar outros tipos de câncer na paciente.
